Reading in the US

How come people here in the US decide that reading books is “stupid” and “boring?”

Why can’t anyone curl up with a good book anymore? The other day I was walking around with my hardback version of Prey(I only like hardback books, paperback feels weird to read) and some guy came over to me and said, “You like to read, huh?,” My answer of course was yes… so the guy told me, “Why would you read something for fun, reading’s stupid and boring…”

At this point, I believe what little faith I had in humanity was lost. I want to know why society has abandoned books, I think it might be because television feeds us all the “information” we need. Also, it might be the culture of today… the whole rap or redneck thing, this is one of those things I don’t understand. Why join a culture that awards ignorance? Why would you not want to further your education? And why, for goodness sake, would you not want to read?

Sometimes humanity can be stupid, and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it. I would like to see the day when the nerds, like me, rebel and create our own world… one where the internet is the premier means to interact(I’m only kidding of course, plus the internet thing already happened).
